001
General
Do I need a sailing licence for a smartkat®?
That depends on the country, lake, coast or local sailing area. Always check the local rules before sailing or ask the harbour, sailing school or local authority.
Where can I sail a smartkat®?
The smartkat® is intended for lakes, inland waters, sheltered bays and suitable coastal areas. Local rules, weather, wind, current, waves and your experience decide what is sensible.
Who is the smartkat® made for?
For mobile sailors, beginners, experienced catamaran sailors, campers, travellers, families and everyone who wants real sailing without a fixed mooring or trailer.
What makes it different from a classic catamaran?
The smartkat® is built for mobility: inflatable hulls, a dismantled frame, bag transport and tool-free setup. It still remains a real sailing catamaran with trampoline, rig, daggerboard and rudder system.
Can I sail regattas with a smartkat®?
Sporty sailing is possible. Whether a specific regatta fits depends on the event rules, boat class and organiser.
002
Sailing & safety
How easy is the smartkat® to sail?
The smartkat® is manageable and suitable for beginners as well as experienced sailors. If you are new to sailing, practise in light wind and calm water or get an introduction.
From what wind strength can I sail?
Light wind is enough for relaxed sailing. As wind increases, the smartkat® becomes sportier and needs more attention. In strong gusts or unknown areas, decide conservatively.
How fast is a smartkat®?
Speed depends on wind, crew weight, trim, waves and experience. Official model values are listed in the technical data.
How many people can come aboard?
Depending on model, crew weight, wind and sailing area, the smartkat® is designed for one to four people.
Is the smartkat® stable?
Two hulls give a catamaran good initial stability. Sailing is still an active sport, so life jackets, weather checks and careful decisions remain important.
What happens if the smartkat® capsizes?
Capsizing can happen with any sailing boat. Practise righting the boat in light wind and safe surroundings before sailing more sportily.
Which CE category does the smartkat® have?
Please check the current CE information for your exact model and year in the official technical data or documents.
003
Setup & transport
How long does setup take?
With practice, setup takes about 20 to 25 minutes. Allow more time for the first setup and learn the steps calmly.
Do I need tools?
No. The smartkat® is designed for tool-free setup and dismantling.
Can I set it up alone?
Yes, many owners set up their smartkat® alone. With two people it is more relaxed, especially in wind or at the beginning.
How is the boat transported?
The smartkat® packs into two bags and fits many cars, camper vans or roof boxes, depending on model, vehicle and luggage.
Can I take it on a plane?
Depending on airline rules, transport as sports luggage can be possible. Always check current dimensions, weights and fees before travelling.
Can I transport it on a car roof?
The main concept is bag transport. If parts are carried outside or on a roof rack, load limits, legal rules and secure fastening must be respected.
004
Product technology
Why does the smartkat® have a daggerboard?
The daggerboard helps the boat sail upwind and reduces sideways drift. It is an important part of the sailing performance.
Why are the hulls inflatable?
Inflatable hulls make the smartkat® transportable and easy to store while offering volume, buoyancy and damping on the water.
What does the hull shape do?
Hull shape affects buoyancy, tracking, water position and behaviour in waves. The smartkat® is designed for mobile catamaran sailing.
Which sails are used?
Depending on model and equipment, robust sail materials such as Dacron are used. Please check the exact equipment on the model page.
Can the trampoline be replaced or upgraded?
Trampolines and matching parts depend on model and year. Photos and model information help us recommend the right part.
005
Materials & care
Is the smartkat® suitable for salt water?
Yes. After sailing in salt water, rinse hulls, frame, rigging, fittings and moving parts with fresh water and let everything dry well.
What are the hulls made of?
The hulls are made from robust reinforced fabric with an airtight coating. Current technical details are listed with each model.
How do I clean my smartkat®?
Rinse with fresh water, remove sand and salt and let all parts dry. Avoid aggressive chemicals, hard brushes and direct high pressure on sensitive areas.
How should I store it?
Store it clean, dry and without permanent tension. If parts are wet after sailing, open the bags and let everything dry completely first.
How sustainable is a smartkat®?
A long-lasting boat that can be repaired, maintained and supplied with spare parts is more meaningful than a short-lived leisure product.
006
Accessories & motor
Can I use a motor?
Yes, a suitable electric or combustion motor can be used with the right mounting. Secure fitting, shaft length and local rules are important.
Does an electric motor make sense?
For harbour manoeuvres, calm conditions or short distances, an electric motor can be very useful. Range depends on motor, battery, wind, current and load.
Can I use a trapeze?
That depends on model, equipment, experience and sailing area. Trapeze sailing is sportier and needs good boat control.
Which accessories are useful?
An electric pump, suitable bags, spare wear parts, safety equipment, paddles or a motor solution can be useful depending on how you sail.
Can accessories be retrofitted?
Many accessories can be retrofitted if model, year and existing equipment fit together.
007
Buying & service
Where can I buy a smartkat®?
Directly in the official smartkat® Online Store. You will find current models, accessories and spare parts there.
Can I test the smartkat® before buying?
If current test sailing dates or regional contacts are available, a personal impression is very helpful.
Are spare parts available?
Yes. Spare parts are an important part of the smartkat® system because a quality boat should be used, maintained and upgraded for a long time.
Are older models compatible with new parts?
Many parts are compatible across model generations or can be retrofitted. Model, year and photos help us check what fits.
Which warranty applies?
The exact warranty depends on model, purchase date, country and conditions. Please check the store information or contact the smartkat® team.
