Capsize Protection – Floatation Cushion

The capsize protection cushion keeps the mast top of dinghies or catamarans above the water surface. It prevents full turtling (inversion), making it easier for the crew to right the boat.

An Airbag for Dinghies

The SECUMAR capsize protection cushion works similarly to an airbag – stored compactly at the mast top and only deploying when needed. When a catamaran capsizes, it’s especially at risk of turtling completely. Due to the long lever arm, even a small buoyancy force at the mast top is enough to prevent this. The cushion supports righting the boat by the crew.

Automatic Deployment at the Mast Top

Once the mast tip touches the water, the cushion is automatically inflated with CO₂. The fully inflated cushion immediately halts any further inversion. This system has proven effective for:

• Catamarans (Smartkat 460 / Smartkat 500)

• Large dinghies (e.g., Conger)

• Naval cutters (GRP construction, for both masts)

Protection for Your Sails

In shallow waters, the sails can also be damaged during a capsize. Once white sails are dragged through mud, they never look the same. A capsize cushion is therefore also worth it to protect your sails.

Note (as of February 2023):
While a capsize cushion reduces the risk of full inversion, effectiveness depends on conditions. Before use, evaluate the torque at the mast top that the cushion must counteract. Consider wind, waves, and currents that may worsen capsizing.
